A MUM looked on in horror as her daughter was fatally run over on her way back from school on Wednesday afternoon.

The tragic death of the five-year-old from the NSW Central Coast came on the first day of the new school term.

Police believe the primary school student was crossing the road to meet her mother after school finished when she was killed. It is understood she had stepped off the school bus only moments before and several other schoolchildren also saw the accident, reported the Daily Telegraph.

Police said she sustained multiple injuries in the incident that happened on Hastings Street, Rocky Point, near Wyong at about 3.40pm on Wednesday.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, told The Daily Telegraph there had been about 20 police officers on the street.

“I heard the sirens but had no idea what had happened or that a child had been killed,” the man, who asked not to be named, said.

“It’s a main road and there are often children crossing but I’ve never heard of an accident before and I’ve lived here about 17 years.”

Another neighbour said that regardless of what had happened it was simply a tragedy for the small, tight-knit community.

“We may not know their names but we know all the kids’ faces from around here,” she said.

“I see the same kids waiting every day at the bus stop. It’s horrible.”

Police from Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command and NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the scene. First aid was rendered to the child. However, she died at the scene.

Fairfax reported that Police understood the girl was “quite a distance” in front of a bus when she began crossing the road. However, the bus obscured the view of her from the oncoming truck driver.

The family, including the grief stricken mother, has been taken to Wyong Hospital suffering shock reported 7 News.

The driver of the truck has been taken for mandatory testing, however there are no indications of any wrongdoing. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
