FIVE officers were needed to arrest a man who allegedly threatened a grandmother, mother and child on the beachfront at Palm Beach about 1pm on Wednesday.
Officers found a multi-tool on the man but there is no allegation he threatened anyone with it.
After the alleged incident with the family, the man then boarded a city-bound bus but police stopped the vehicle after it had travelled about 400m along Ocean Rd.
Police told other passengers on the bus to get off and then approached the man.
The man then allegedly wrestled with five police officers and allegedly assaulted at least one of them as he threw punches at them.
Eventually the man was subdued and placed in the back of a paddy wagon.
He was then taken to Manly police station for questioning.
He will be charged with assaulting police and resisting arrest.
Officers were in the process of interviewing the mother and grandmother late Wednesday.
