Former Test batsmen Sunil Gavaskar and Aakash Chopra welcomed Anil Kumble’s appointment as head coach of Indian cricket team. Gavaskar said the former leg-spinner will be a living legend in the dressing room and there will be “acche din” in Indian cricket.
Gavaskar praised Kumble’s lofty credentials as a cricketer and how he conquered pain to fight for India. Gavaskar said India’s young Turks could check the internet to find out who Kumble was.
“Players can Google on Kumble and find out what he has achieved. He will earn a lot of respect in the dressing room. He has been a great performer for India,” Gavaskar told NDTV in an exclusive chat.
Kumble was recommended by the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee to take over as head coach ahead of Ravi Shastri, who performed the job of Team Director successfully until the World T20.
Kumble, with no international coaching experience, has been given a year-long term but Gavaskar feels it is not a disadvantage.
“One year term is enough…You don’t need a coaching degree, all you have to be is a good man manager. Kumble brings to the table a lot of determination, experience and intelligence as India coach,” Gavaskar said.
Chopra said Kumble will not be a passive coach. “He has a mind of his own and will show Virat Kohli the other side of the coin….this will be good for the team,” said the former Test batsman.
