While on one hand, Bollywood actors toil their sweat and blood to reach a respectable position, on the other hand, they also at times get accused of nefarious activates. Be it black money or their ‘connection’ with the underworld, Bollywood has often been connected to the dark side. The latest Bollywood actor (hold your breath!) to be accused is none other than Amitabh Bachchan and his daughter in law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in connection with the ‘Panama Papers’, which contains the documents of Panama-based ‘Mossack Fonseca’, that contains emails, PDF files, and photo files. The Bachchans have been named in the huge leak of documents from the secret files of ‘Mossack Fonseca’.
Here’s the story. A leading newspaper has recently unearthed a story that involves a staggering leak of 11.5 million tax documents resulting in the exposure of the secret offshore dealings of world renowned sports persons, world leaders, businessmen like DLF owner KP Singh, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and Bollywood celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. The investigations have revealed more than 11 million documents from the secret files of ‘Mossack Fonseca’. What is shocking and surprising is that even the dreaded underworld don Late Iqbal Mirchi’s name also figured in the list.
As per the report that has been published in the newspaper, even though the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) BI had allowed individuals to remit funds up to $25,000 a year under LRS (Liberalised Remittance Scheme), but, it never allowed Indian citizen to set up companies abroad. Amitabh Bachchan (in the year 1993), had been appointed as the ‘Director’ in at least four offshore shipping companies, of which one was in the BVI and the rest three were in the Bahamas. Additionally, Aishwarya Rai and her family members were registered as directors of ‘Amic Partners Limited’ in the year 2005. Before the company’s dissolution in the year 2008, Aishwarya Rai’s status was changed to ‘share holder’.
