$154,000 Mutant Gold Apple Watch

THIS has to be the most unusual way the luxury watch world has attacked the threat of the smartwatch: take a super expensive gold watch and whack an Apple Watch onto the back of it.

American watchmaker Nico Gerard has created a limited range of luxury timepieces that incorporate an Apple Watch into the back of the band.

If you want to tell the time by looking at a watch that costs more than most people’s yearly wage, you look at the top of your wrist. If you want to tell the time by looking at an Apple Watch, you flip your arm over.

The Pinnacle watches come in three models, but the top of the pile is the $154,000 Sunrise Pinnacle, which has a limited production run of just 88 watches.
“The tranquil morning dew is cool and the fresh air is still. The dawn of a new day glows red with promise,” the Nico Gerard website says of the Pinnacle in a style of prose that would not look out of place in 50 Shades of Grey — well, one of the bits without the kinky sex.

“You feel the warmth of the sun’s rays wrap around you as the sun crests the horizon. The morning beauty fills your heart with joy.

“The red face of the Nico Gerard Sunrise Pinnacle lets you experience the excitement of a sunrise as this unique work of art graces your wrist.”

You don’t have to pay $154,000 for one of Nico Gerard’s combinations. The black model, which has a delivery window of at least 10 months, is just $12,780 while the blue model is $13,000 and that could be yours as soon as eight months after you order it.

While some might think it is the best idea ever, for our money (and, no, that’s not enough money to buy one of Nico’s creations), it looks like the watch equivalent of Professor Quirrel from Harry Potter when he had Voldemort growing out of the back of his head.

From a practical point of view, we can see problems.

By the time the Nico Gerard creation arrives, Apple will probably have put out the next version of the Apple Watch so your $154,000 time piece could be out of date on day one.

Also, the fancy pants side of the two-in-one design is waterproof to 100m while the Apple Watch side is not recommended for wearing in the shower.

Still, luxury watch purchases are not necessarily based on logic.

If nothing else, this is definitely a talking piece. It’s just possibly best not to hear what people say about you if you’re wearing it.
