An elderly man in Victoria has died after contracting coronavirus, bringing the State’s death toll from the illness to seven.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton confirmed a man in his 80s died in hospital overnight.

“He was in intensive care. We have another seven who are in intensive care. It is a serious situation,” he told Seven’s Sunrise program on Friday.

Australia’s death toll from coronavirus now stands at 25 from 5,224 confirmed cases.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide passed the 1 million threshold overnight as the pandemic swept across the globe.

Johns Hopkins University’s website showed the milestone was hit Thursday afternoon. The count represents confirmed cases, but the true numbers are believed to be much higher.
