The suburbs Australians want to live in

IF you’re in the property buying game, then chances are you’ve searched in one of these suburbs.

The problem is you are not alone. But if you are a homeowner with an inkling to sell you might find yourself in the driver’s seat if they’re hoping to offload bricks and mortar in one of these sought-after suburbs.

Property portal realestate.com.au has crunched the data to find the most searched suburbs in Australia and there are some surprising results.

NSW, Australia’s most populous state, has not been getting the most househunting traffic.

In fact the “premier state” didn’t get a look in on the top 10 list for those seeking houses, instead Victoria and South Australia dominated.

For those neighbourhoods where buyers were looking for units, NSW suburbs represented six out of 10.

The executive general manager of realestate.com.au, Andrew Rechtman, said the Top Sellers’ Markets showed the Australian suburbs in highest demand from buyers.

“The data shows that if you own a property in one of the top ten, and are considering selling, now is a great time to list on the market. On the flip side, if you’re looking to buy a property, these are the suburbs where you may face hot competition,” he said.

Prahran in Melbourne’s south was the most searched neighbourhood in the past six months for houses followed by Hawthorne, also in the Victorian capital, and then Parkside on Adelaide’s city fringe.

The number crunchers at realestate.com.au reported Prahran gets an average of 509 visits a day on their site.

While the current three-bedroom median house price is $1.417 million, properties have recently sold for as much as $2.525 million and figures from CoreLogic show that the median house price has skyrocket by 71.6 per cent in a five-year period.

Second placeholder on the most searched suburbs list, Hawthorn, scored points with buyers who wanted more bang for their buck.

Randwick in Sydney’s east, which has a median three-bedroom house price of $1.792 million (up a whopping 17 per cent in just one year), was the most searched for suburb for houses in NSW, while the top slot in Queensland went to Holland Park in South Brisbane with its far more modest three-bedroom median of $617,000.

For units, the top spot in the country was the pint-sized inner city patch of East Melbourne where the median two-bedroom apartment is $695,000, followed by Cremorne on Sydney’s North Shore, where the median is $888,000 and Drummoyne in the inner western region of the harbour city, which has a two-bedroom unit median of $840,000.
