Richmond premiership star Dustin Martin and 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams may be friends, but don’t expect to see the Tiger at any of Williams’ matches.

The duo stunned AFL and tennis fans in 2019 when Martin appeared in one of Williams’ Instagram stories along with her husband Alexis Ohanian while on vacation in the Maldives.

However, while she admitted that the pair would catch up during her time in Australia, Williams explained why Martin will not be in her players’ box during the Australian Open.

“We decided he couldn’t come to the Australian Open because he would be mobbed way too much,” she told reporters after her straight sets win over Anastasia Potapova on Monday.

“He can’t do everyday things like that. He’s way too recognisable. I think everyone would go nuts if they saw him.

“So it was like if we could hang out, it would be cool. But definitely not in Melbourne Park or here. It would be way too crazy for him.”

Even though the 2017 Brownlow Medallist would not be at her matches, Williams expressed her admiration for Martin’s own spectacular athletic feats.

“He’s so good at his job, it’s insane,” she said.

“It’s so cool to get to know other athletes that are so good at their craft and almost just get to talk to them and see what makes them so good.”
