Regional NSW is a bigger jobs creator than the whole of Queensland, the latest ABS data showed, proving that the benefits of being the nation’s strongest economy are being experienced right across the State.

The official figures released today showed that 59,700 jobs were added in the regions in the year to March, an increase of five per cent. The number accounts for about half the number of jobs added in NSW and is greater than the number of jobs added in Queensland.

Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian said the figures showed employment in regional NSW is growing at a rate two and a half times faster than Victoria.

“We have seen amazing results when it comes to jobs growth in NSW and regional NSW is punching well above its weight,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“NSW is leading the nation when it comes to economic strength and it is important that everyone and every region benefits from this.”

Regions with particularly strong jobs growth results over the year to March include the Greater Illawarra (up 6.2 per cent), Richmond-Tweed (up 19.4 per cent), the Central Coast (up 19.1 per cent) and the Hunter including Newcastle and Lake Macquarie (up 11 per cent). The Riverina continues to enjoy the State’s lowest unemployment rate.

Minister for Regional Development, Skills and Small Business John Barilaro said the Government’s support for vital investment in local infrastructure is giving regional businesses the confidence to invest and create new jobs.

“With over 59,000 jobs created in the last 12 months we continue to see strong job growth in our regions,” Mr Barilaro said.

“The NSW Government continues to invest for the long term, supporting regional businesses, communities and investing in infrastructure.”
