Emergency services have made the grim discovery of a man’s body inside a smoke-filled unit on NSW’s mid north coast on Saturday.

The man, who police say was 59, was found dead inside the Forster apartment after reports of a fire.

Police, paramedics and firefighters arrived at the scene on Little Street about 10am and reported seeing a large amount of smoke billowing from the front door of the unit.

Officers forced their way inside and found the man.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Footage from the brick apartment complex showed the unit’s entrance cordoned off with police tape.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said the blaze was largely self-extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.

A crime scene was established as detectives and NSW Fire Investigators worked to determine what sparked the fire.

NSW Police said in a statement that initial inquiries indicated there were no suspicious circumstances.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
