European premium fashion giant H&M has closed its 49 stores nationally in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, including its five WA outlets.

The move by the Swedish retailer may affect more than 1300 jobs nation-wide, including those at Mandurah Forum, the CBD Wellington Street store, Westfield Carousel, Lakeside Joondalup and Karrinyup Shopping Centres.

“Right now, we’re facing a situation that no one could prepare for,” H&M Australia told customers in a statement.

“We are continuously following the advice of local authorities and will keep you informed of any health and safety of our customers and colleagues remains our top priority.

“As we navigate these uncertain times, supporting our team members is of the utmost importance.”

H&M entered the Australian market in 2014 and announced it would launch online shopping later this year.

H&M, or Hennes & Mauritz, had a stand-out success in Melbourne, where it set up shop in the Bourke Street Mall in what was also once that city’s central post office, before moving to Perth.
