A South Australian family was not prepared to lose any of their possessions or their car, detaining a man who allegedly stole from their home while he was sitting inside their vehicle.

The Hillbank residents, in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, called police about 5.30am on Friday and told them they had caught a man who had allegedly broke into their home and stole property including a wallet, electronics and clothing.

Two of the family members managed to stop the alleged thief while he was sitting inside the family vehicle – which he also allegedly attempted to steal – that was parked in the driveway.

They detained the alleged culprit until police arrived and arrested the 18-year-old from Elizabeth Grove.

He was charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass, theft and illegal interference.

He did not apply for bail and was due to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday.
