EASTER is here again. It’s a time for chocolate, drinks and good food if you know where to get some.
Most shops will be closed on Good Friday, but every state’s trading hours differ slightly. That’s why we’ve broken down the trading hours for NSW, ACT, VIC and QLD.
NEW SOUTH WALES
Good Friday is a restricted shop trading day in NSW, but unlike last year Easter Sunday is not. This means that most major stores will be closed this Friday and open Saturday, Sunday and Monday. This includes: Coles, Woolworths, Liquorland and Dan Murphy’s. Their operating hours will vary in each instance so it’s best to check your local store’s online.
Small independent stores and traders are allowed to open both Friday and Sunday, but again, it’s best to check their hours as it’s at their discretion.
ACT
There are no trading restrictions for Canberra over the long weekend, save for liquor stores on Good Friday.
VICTORIA AND QUEENSLAND
Like NSW, Good Friday is a restricted trading day while Saturday, Sunday and Monday are not. Most major traders, and all bottle shops, will be closed the Friday and open for the rest of the weekend.
There are exceptions for smaller businesses, meaning that exempted restaurants, cafes and takeaway outlets can choose to open. Queensland’s list of exempt stores are particularly lengthy, and worth checking out if you’re stuck on what to do. And when we say eat and drink – we also mean enjoy the googs!
NORTHERN TERRITORY
Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday are all public holidays in the Northern Territory. Retail trading hours are not restricted however, and businesses can open when they like, but most stores choose to close on Good Friday.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
South Australians will have three public holidays this Easter: Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. South Australia The state has some of the more complex rules around trading hours and Easter trading restrictions will depend on both the size of your business and where it is located. You can find out more here.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Western Australia has Good Friday and Easter Monday as public holidays. General retail shops in WA must remain closed on Good Friday. Small retail shops, special retail shops and small filling stations can open if they are exempt. More information about these categories is available here.
TASMANIA
Tasmania has three public holidays for Easter, and it’s the only state with a public holiday on the Tuesday after Easter. Trading hours are generally unrestricted in Tasmania, but businesses may need to contact the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce or the Fair Work Ombudsman to find out if they are affected by the Easter Tuesday holiday.
