Greg Norman spends Christmas Day in hospital after showing COVID-19 symptoms, told to self-isolate

Australian golf legend Greg Norman has spent Christmas Day in a US hospital after being told by his doctor to self-isolate, having shown symptoms of COVID-19.

Norman posted a photograph on social media from a hospital bed, wearing a black mask.

He also shared images of medical staff around him, in full personal protective equipment.

“I feel very flu-like,” Norman said in an earlier video on his Instagram account.

“I have a mild fever, I have a cough, I have aches and pains, I have a mild headache, so I am in self-quarantine.

“Ugly place to be … but I just do not want to jeopardise [anyone], affecting any of my family or friends and loved ones around me.”

Having initially self-quarantined at home, the condition of the two-time major champion appeared to have deteriorated on Christmas Day.

“On behalf of millions, f*** CoVid,” he wrote.

“[Let’s] get this s*** behind us never to experience it again.”

His son, Greg Norman Jr, also posted to social media that he and his wife, Michelle, had tested positive to coronavirus.

“Such a strange virus, I barely felt a thing and Michelle got hit hard by it Michelle is incredibly healthy and extremely fit,” Norman Jr wrote in an Instagram post.

“We both feel we went above and beyond on protocols to avoid the virus.”

Norman has been based in the US since the 1980s and lives at Hobe Sound in Florida.

Florida is the fourth-worst affected US state in terms of the pandemic, with more than 20,000 coronavirus deaths and over 1 million infections.

Earlier in the week, Norman said he had returned a negative test, before a telephone call from his doctor raised the alarm bells of coronavirus.

“Even though I had a test on Tuesday, and the result came back yesterday, which was negative, I am exhibiting mild symptoms of potentially COVID,” he said in his earlier video.

A former world number one golfer, Norman won the 1986 and 1993 British Opens, among 88 professional victories.
