A couple out celebrating the Christmas period have been left with a huge bill after they claim they was misled about the cost of an Uber ride.
Gold Coast couple Karin and Anthony Walker were making the trip home from a night out when they jumped in a ride-sharing car paid for by Mr Walker’s boss.
‘Imagine our horror when my husband arrived at work this morning, only to be informed by a colleague that the Uber ride home had cost $350,’ Mrs Walker told the Sunshine Coast Daily.
‘Never in a million years would you’d think it would of cost that amount.’
The pair were travelling home to Doonan from Mooloolaba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, a 30 minute drive. Trips between the two suburbs generally are between $55 and $70.
They say when they initially stepped in the car, the driver did make it clear it was during a surge time, when prices of trips are increased due to demand.
However, they claim they were told it would only cost about double what the ride normally would. They were also told a taxi would cost three times as much.
‘To me that’s criminal and almost what you’d pay for a taxi to Brisbane,’ Mrs Walker said.
The Walkers say they have reached out to Uber several times over the fare, attempting to get an explanation over the cost of the trip.
With the peak holidays period underway and people making trips all around the country to see friends and family, the couple want to issue a warning to anyone unsure of what they may be getting themselves into.
‘A lot of people will be using it over Christmas and probably won’t be aware of how much they will be charged with the huge surge amounts,’ Mrs Walker said.
‘I think you’d be better off lining up in a taxi rank.’
