Restrictions on products at Coles and Woolworths will be lifted after being re-introduced last month when panic buying reared its ugly head once again.
The two supermarkets will lift limits from today on all products – except toilet paper.
“We thank customers for their patience and understanding while the limits were in place to help us manage increased demand in stores,” Coles said in a statement last night.
“We ask that customers continue to buy only what they need and observe all safety and physical distancing measures in our stores.”
Woolworths said it would “not hesitate to reinstate product limits if needed”.
The recent coronavirus outbreak in Victoria sparked another wave of panic-buying, prompting the supermarkets to crackdown on stockpilers on June 26.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the resurgence in panic-buying was ridiculous.
“Stop it, it’s ridiculous,” he told reporters on Friday.
“I’m sure it will pass as it did last time. There’s no need for it.”
Coles chief operating officer Matt Swindells reiterated the PM’s thought on Nine’s Today Show this morning.
“There is no need for panic buying. We have all lived through the last six weeks with restrictions off. We bought what we needed when we needed it. Everyone got on fine with life,”
“Let’s do this in a collaborative way. Only buy what you need, treat each other with respect and we will be back on track before we know it. Don’t let frustration get the better of you.”
Both supermarkets will monitor restrictions over the coming weeks.
