A Victorian man stung for allegedly flouting lockdown regulations when he was caught washing his car has had a $1652 fine revoked.

The man was questioned by police who spotted him at a Hoppers Crossing car wash at 1.15am, before he was slapped with the heavy financial punishment.

The man argued he was an essential worker who was clocking 12 to 14-hour days delivering produce to supermarkets, meaning he had little spare time.

“I work in essential services. I’m working 12 to 14-hour f****** days and I don’t get time to wash the b******,” he told officers.

Police today backed down, withdrawing the penalty.

Victoria Police said an error was made, explaining that people could use commercial outlets that remain open as long as they adhere to social distancing guidelines.

“This incident has been reviewed and the decision has been made to withdraw the infringement notice,” a police statement read.

“On occasion, errors will be made however that is why a review process exists to ensure instances such as these are identified and rectified.”

Confirmed coronavirus cases in Australia have now topped 6152, with 54 deaths – including 13 in Victoria.
