Indian restaurant owner Rupen Dutta’s entire family of five died following a horrific road accident in India when the family was travelling to the Taj Mahal.
Rupen Dutta had lived with his wife Anamika, their children Nikita, Bipasha and Digvijay in Adelaide for over 17 years.
The family ran a successful Indian restaurant, Urban India on Henley Beach Road, in Adelaide popular among Indian food connoisseurs for 11 years before the family met with their tragic end early this year on a family trip to India.
A memorial service was organised by the Indian community at the restaurant after last member of the family Rupen Dutta died. The restaurant closed down after this tragedy.
Now, chefs of this restaurant have approached the property owner and shown interest in re-opening the venue as a special homage to the family who ran it successfully for over a decade in Adelaide.
Property owner Jim Dimitropoulos told the Weekly Times Messenger that two chefs from the former Urban India restaurant on Henley Beach Rd were planning to reopen the venue, partly in homage to former owners Rupendra (Rupen) and Anamika Dutta.
Mr Dimitropoulos said the site was likely to reopen before the end of the year.
The chefs were “very, very close” to the Datta family, Mr Dimitropoulos said.
“We’re still in the hands of the solicitor, trying to organise the family paperwork for the estate.
“We’re not far off,” Mr Dimitropoulos said.
It is likely that the restaurant will be renamed.
