Right from the start, Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja were tight lipped about when and how will they tie the knot. The question of denials never really arose since both their social media feeds were replete with pictures of blissful togetherness. Uptil now, Sonam had always refrained from talking about Anand in public. In fact, in one of her early appearances on Koffee with Karan, she had categorically stated that “it’s tacky” to talk about the person you’re seeing in public. Then, in 2010, she said, “The reason it’s called private and personal is because it’s private and personal,” and she maintained that stance until beau Anand Ahuja started making appearances on her Instagram. But what everyone was excited to know was the details.

Sonam Ki Shaadi

So when the almost week-long festivities began, and the gorgeous details unfolded, with the whos who of Bollywood attending, it was certainly the shaadi of the season. Previously, when Sonam was asked about her wedding plans, she had shared, “I think the whole idea of a marriage is more appealing to me than a wedding. I think there is too much money spent; it’s all very crass, and I would rather give that money away. I’d rather have a wedding at home than anywhere else. I think it’s important to do all the rituals, but I don’t believe in spending all that money, I find it disgusting and very wasteful and I’m not okay with that at all.” Umm, really Sonam?

WHO IS ANAND AHUJA?

Not much is known about Anand besides the fact that he is a Delhi-based businessman. Anand is the founder of a popular clothing brand, Bhane. He also owns the country’s first multi-brand sneaker company VegNonVeg. He is the grandson of Harish Ahuja, owner of Shahi Exports, claimed to be India’s largest export house. Anand completed his post-graduation in America before joining the family business. It was in 2016 that Sonam and Anand were first seen together that gave rise to some speculations about their relationship. Will Smith was in India at the time and with this picture, the rumour of their alleged relationship caught on.

Sonam’s stylist and fashion designer Pernia Qureshi was the one who introduced her to Anand. Anand reportedly proposed to Sonam within a month of their first meeting. While they dated, neither spoke publicly about being in a relationship. Their Instagram posts, however, spoke volumes about their admiration for each other and pretty much convinced everyone that they are in love.

THE INVITE

The invites are clearly inspired by nature and have been designed with shades of green with three different designs of foliage printed on them. Photos of the invite, which are now viral on social media, also reveal the detailed itinerary of the two-day wedding festivities. Sonam and Aanand reportedly opted for e-invites to skip wastage of paper. The e-invites sent to all the guests came with unique features. Not only did the guests have to flash those cards at the venue of ceremonies, but the cards also carried a watermark of the name of the invitee.

Around 100 of the couple’s special guests received the e-invites. But those very close to the Kapoors didn’t even need that – proud father of the bride, Anil Kapoor, personally called up each and every guest to invite them for Sonam’s big day. The e-invite was simply a formality that was done away with in some cases.

THE EVENT

Sonam’s Mehendi party was held on May 7 at Sunteck, Signature Island, her residence in Bandra-Kurla complex which is a 7000 sq-ft apartment from 4 pm. The previous evening, there was the actual mehndi ceremony where Sonam looked ethereal as she got her limbs bedecked with henna. For her first event, the starlet chose an Anuradha Vakil attire to match her then hubby-to-be who was clad in salmon pink. As it was a very casual event, her outfit wasn’t over the top.

For the actual mehndi application ceremony, Sonam wore an off-white sleeveless kameez, lilac embellished izhaar and a coral coloured dupatta, which she had wrapped around – keeping in sync with the pastels. The entire outfit was bordered with gold gota work, giving the otherwise modern outfit a traditional twist. Veena Nagda, celebrity henna artist and a constant at all mehndis in Bollywood and her team applied mehndi on Sonam and her friends and family. Groom-to-be Anand Ahuja also had a little elephant motif done on his hands.

The dress code for the mehndi and sangeet party was shades of white. This event also saw the choora ceremony where Sonam wore the traditional bangles a Hindu bride wears. Clad in a breathtaking AbuJani Sandeep Khosla ensemble, Sonam stunned many in an ivory lehenga choli. She opted for kundan jewellery consisting of a heavy choker, jhumkas and maang teeka. The choli had intricate gold detailing while the lehenga and dupatta were self-printed, also bordered with gota. From joyous guests to gleeful to-be-bride and groom, Sonam’s pre-wedding ceremony in Mumbai was a sight for sore eyes. Like any other family get-together, here too the Kapoor clan made a stylish appearance. The Kapoor sisters Janhvi, Khushi, Anshula, Shanaya and Rhea and the Kapoor brothers Harshvardhan, Arjun, Jahaan, Mohit Marwah and Akshay Marwah made the day a memorable one for Sonam. Sonam’s parents Anil Kapoor and Sunita Kapoor too enjoyed their daughter’s pre-wedding ceremony. Later, we even saw Anand and Sonam dancing together on the happy occasion as the guests cheered for the lovely couple. Apart from the Kapoors, Anil’s industry friends Karan Johar, Kirron Kher and Rani Mukerji were also seen at the intimate do.

The wedding took place according to Sikh rituals at Sonam’s masi’s heritage bungalow, Rockdale, 226, Bandstand, Bandra. This was followed by lunch. Another Anuradha Vakil creation, Sonam’s wedding dress was magenta coloured adorned with gold embellishments. The Veere Di Wedding star went all out on her big day with a very conventional outfit and heavy, old-fashioned jewellery to keep in with the theme of her attire, including the traditional red bangles. Her makeup, on the other hand, was minimal. Meanwhile, Anand wore a Nehru collar muted dark beige sherwani. The groom teamed his attire with a traditional dark beige and cream safa and a pearl and stone neckpiece accentuated his look.

That same evening, a glitzy party was thrown for the film fraternity at The Leela, Mumbai. The actor pulled a Sonam at the final event wearing a funky Anamika Khanna ensemble. The grey lehenga choli was quite simple with hardly any ornamentation, but was still pretty ‘out there’ nonetheless. Sonam changed her makeup up a bit at the reception, going with red lips and dramatic eyes.

She kept her hair straight and a layered necklace was the only piece of jewellery she wore, complementing the whole look perfectly. While the zigzag print may be too much to handle for most, if there’s anyone who could pull it off, it’s Sonam. Twitterati were quick to spot the out-of-the-place pair of sneakers that Anand was wearing at the reception. But soon, everything fell into place and his cool quotient was appreciated. And like the fashion-forward couple, their guest too made jaw-dropping appearances in both traditional and modern ensembles. Metallics seemed to be the theme for the night with everyone stepping up in their shimmery and chic outfits.

From Bollywood veterans to next-gen actors, a plethora of film stars came under one roof to join Sonam and Anand on their happy day. B-town’s biggest stars from Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Karan Johar, Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karisma Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Rani Mukerji, Kangana Ranaut, Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Shahid Kapoor, the Ambanis, Kajol, Vidya Balan, Sidharth Malhotra, Shweta Bachchan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Suniel Shetty, Athiya Shetty among many others.

THE JEWELLERY

Most of Sonam’s bridal jewellery was done by her mom Sunita Kapoor, though she wore a few select pieces from Amrapali as well.

Sonam got her mangalsutra personalised by having her and her husband Anand Ahuja’s sun signs imbibed on it in the form of a diamond which is joined by a solitaire. While Sonam’s star sign Gemini is made on the left, Anand Ahuja’s star sign Leo is on the right.

Reports suggest that Anand Ahuja, who apparently owns a property worth Rs 3,000 crore, gifted Sonam a diamond ring worth Rs 95 lakh. With that, Sonam’s ring becomes one of the most expensive among the Bollywood brides.
