MIGRAINE   – causes and treatment

Headaches   and associated neck pain are very common in our society. All headaches are not migraine. . The most common headaches in adults are: tension headaches, cluster headaches, sinusitis headaches, headaches from sun exposure, common cold etc.  In extreme cases it can be due to high blood pressure or head injury, infection in the brain and sometimes brain tumor.

Migraines are one of the most common types of headache in adults, affecting many women and men. Even children can suffer from migraine. Women are three times more susceptible than men. You can get migraines at any age but they’re most common before the age of 35.+. There is strong family history of migraine. Migraine headaches can have a major impact on daily life and the quality of life.

A classic migraine follows a set of warning symptoms called aura. These symptoms usually come on before the general symptoms of a migraine and last for about an hour. Around one in three people will experience aura symptoms. Sometimes common migraine strikes without aura also.

Common aura symptoms include: blurred vision, temporary blindness numbness or a tingling sensation – common in the hands, arm or face, similar to ‘pins and needles’, slurred speech visual disturbances – such as flashing or flickering lights, zigzag lines, poor coordination

There are different types: abdominal migraine, hormonal migraine and food allergy migraine

You may get a migraine at any time. Sometimes you may be able to sense when a migraine attack is about to start. The general symptoms of migraines include:

  • a headache that lasts anything from four up to 48 hours
  • pulsating or throbbing pain, often just on one side of your head, feeling sick or vomiting, increased sensitivity to light and noise.  abdominal pain irritability and excessive crying due to headaches

Migraine can occur at any time anywhere and has no mercy even on your wedding night.

If you get frequent migraines, you may be at an increased risk of depression, anxiety, panic disorders and stroke. It’s not fully understood what causes migraines, but they may be caused by a chemical called serotonin.   An imbalance Low levels of serotonin cause changes to the blood vessels in your brain which triggers severe headaches.

Other factors   like stress, sleeplessness, excessive coffee alcohol cheese and chocolate can also trigger migraine.  Skipping meals not drinking enough water and certain medications also cause migraine. Women may get migraines around the time of their periods, during pregnancy and menopause, or as a result of taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy

Migraines can be treated with two approaches: abortive and preventive.

Abortive medications to prevent migraine such as Asprin, Panadol, pan diene forte, Naprosyn taken when migraine strikes with medications to stop vomiting. You must avoid things mentioned above.

Regular exercise is essential for migraine    sufferers.

Your need to consult with your doctor for your type of migraine. Very commonly prescribed medications are Sumatriptan taken orally or through nasal spray, Relpax and Zomig.  Finally, for all those chronic migraine suffers the new Botox injection can be given by your Neurologist.

Following may also assist:

simple medications like Panadol aspirin, ginger tea, green tea, dark chocolates. regular exercise, avoiding too much sun exposure, Yoga, meditations and swimming.
