Hunt begins at Sydney property for body of murdered baby

A search is underway at a Sydney property where police believe the body of a baby could be buried.

The Homicide Squad had been told a baby was murdered shortly after it was born in late 2007 or early 2008 and buried on the rural property in dense bushland outside of Sydney.

Detectives from Strike Force Enact, which was formed to investigate the report, had spoken with officials from NSW Health and the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) and NSW Health.

That led strike force detectives and officers attached to the Public Order and Riot Squad to a property on Cliftonville Road, South Maroota, on Tuesday morning.

The search is expected to take some time as much of the area is dense bushland.

“An investigation into the death of a baby will always be delicate and challenging for police and this incident is of great concern to us,” Detective Chief Inspector Angelo Memmolo from the Homicide Squad said.

“We are hoping someone in the community may have information relating to the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death.

“While there are restrictions around what we can say publicly at this stage, we believe in these circumstances, this could be enough to spark someone’s memory.”

He appealed directly to anyone who could be covering up the shocking crime.

“If anyone has knowledge about the possible murder of a baby around this time, please get in touch with us,” Det Insp Memmolo said.
