A BOMB squad robot is searching central Moonee Ponds for threats.

Police are conducting safety checks in Kellaway Ave and Mt Alexander Rd after the safety scare which closed the area this morning.

The bomb response unit is at the scene and is using the robot to search the area.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Anthoula Moutis said: “The area has been secured”.

“There are traffic diversions in place,’’ Sgt Moutis said.

The road is closed in both directions between Taylor St and Homer St, and VicRoads is urging motorists to avoid the area if possible.

The Moonee Ponds Police Station and the Moonee Valley City Council office are just metres away from the area being checked.
