BCCI president Dalmiya rushed to hospital after chest pain

BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya was rushed to the hospital after he complained of uneasiness on returning home from his business office late on Thursday.

Led by Dr Anil Mishra, senior interventional cardiologist at the BM Birla Heart Research Centre, a team of doctors performed an angioplasty, a procedure to unblock blood vessels, on the 75-year-old after Dalmiya was admitted with symptoms of a heart attack.

Hospital sources said Dalmiya would be kept under observation for the next 48 hours following the hour-long surgery. Hospital sources also said that Dalmiya is highly diabetic and about seven years back had suffered a cerebral attack.

A member of Dalmiya’s office staff though said his condition is stable.

“The doctors are taking all precautionary measures,” he said.

Sourav Ganguly, who is also Cricket Association of Bengal joint-secretary, went to the hospital to check on Dalmiya’s health.

The former ICC president has been having health issues for some time with his family members saying he is suffering from an electrolyte imbalance.

Earlier this year, Dalmiya returned as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president replacing N Srinivasan who had to step aside following the verdict in a spot-fixing case against his son-in-law.

Dalmiya, who hails from Kolkata, is credited with helping to turn the game into a lucrative global sport.

He shot to fame when he, along with bureaucrat Inderjit Singh Bindra, broke Australia and England’s hold on the ICC to win the right to host the 1987 World Cup on the sub-continent.

He went on to become ICC president from 1997-2000 and BCCI president from 2001 to 2004, a period which also saw him secure another World Cup for the sub-continent.
